Stay on Track for the Long Game
Retirement accounts are the most patient money in your portfolio. In Violet Codex, set up 401(k)s, IRAs, and Roth accounts. Track contributions by tax year, employer matches, and watch compounding do its work over decades.
What you'll learn
- Add 401(k), IRA, and Roth accounts with proper classification
- Input holdings and track portfolio value with API-powered pricing
- Log contributions from paychecks and track them by tax year
- Record employer matches and broker contribution matching
- Transfer funds directly from bank accounts to IRAs
- Monitor long-term retirement account performance
Step 1: Add a Retirement Account
Navigate to Retirement and click Add Account. Choose the account type (401(k), Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Pension, or HSA). Enter the current balance or add holdings individually with ticker symbols for live tracking.
Step 2: Track Contributions by Tax Year
Each contribution is logged with the tax year it applies to. The app tracks your progress toward annual contribution limits — you always know how much room you have left for the year. For Roth IRAs, see our guide on why maxing your Roth comes before speculative trading.
Step 3: Record Employer Matches
If your employer matches 401(k) contributions, record the match percentage and amount. This shows the true value of your contributions — your own money plus free money from your employer.
Step 4: Monitor Long-Term Growth
The performance chart shows your retirement accounts growing over time. Combined with the dashboard net worth view, you can see how retirement savings contribute to your total financial picture.
